Determine This

Sources

Determine This follows a CAPS-verified-only rule: curriculum claims and past paper examples should be traceable to an official document, not invented or assumed. These are the documents we've actually opened and checked content against so far.

Curriculum and examination guidelines

Used to verify which topics fall under Paper 1 vs Paper 2 for each grade, and which techniques are or aren't examinable (e.g. completing the square is excluded at Grade 12; the k-substitution method and surd equations are included).

Past papers used for example questions

Question text quoted or closely adapted in the topic guides is checked against the original paper before being marked with a 'Source:' citation. Anything not listed here is an original practice question, and is labelled 'Practice question — not sourced from a past paper' on the site itself.

  • Linear pattern questions (3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.2) used in the Arithmetic sequences guide; quadratic pattern question (4.4, adapted) used in the Quadratic sequences guide.

  • Quadratic pattern questions (4.1, 4.2, 4.3) used in the Quadratic sequences guide.

  • Functions and Graphs questions used in the x/y-intercepts, turning point, asymptotes, and determining-the-equation guides: Question 2 (GR11 DBE November 2016, parts 2.1 and 2.3) and Question 1 (GR11 DBE November 2017, part 1.3) for the parabola/hyperbola intercept, turning point and asymptote examples; Question 4 (GR11 DBE November 2015, part 4.1) for the 'determine the equation from the graph' example. Verified against the accompanying memorandum PDF (same eresource page) for the numeric answers quoted in each 'what is this asking' explanation.

  • Trigonometry Question 1 (Nov 2018/2016, part 1.1 — P̂ = 67°, PQ = 3 cm, PR = 9,2 cm, solve for QR) used as the cosine-rule example in the Sine, cosine and area rules guide. The booklet's Statistics section (cricket batsmen standard-deviation example, cumulative-frequency/ogive exercises) was reviewed but not yet used for a cited example, since those exercises aren't themselves attributed to a specific past exam paper/year.

What's not yet verified

Not every example question on this site has been checked against a real paper yet. Each question card says either "Source: …" (verified — checked against the paper listed above) or "Practice question — not sourced from a past paper" (an original question written to illustrate a pattern, not lifted from an exam). If you spot a citation that looks wrong, or a real past paper we should check a question against, let us know.
