Curriculum and examination guidelines
Used to verify which topics fall under Paper 1 vs Paper 2 for each grade, and which techniques are or aren't examinable (e.g. completing the square is excluded at Grade 12; the k-substitution method and surd equations are included).
Grade 12 Paper 1 / Paper 2 topic split and mark weightings; confirmed completing-the-square is excluded and the k-method/surd equations are included for Grade 12 algebra.
Grade 11 Paper 1 / Paper 2 topic split, confirmed Differential Calculus is Grade 12 only.
Grade 10 Paper 1 / Paper 2 topic split and mark weightings, corrected an earlier assumption that Probability only starts in Grade 11; it's examined in Grade 10 too.
Term-by-term content breakdown for Grade 11, confirmed the Number Patterns topic only covers linear and quadratic patterns. Corrected an earlier mistake that included a 'Geometric sequences' question type in the Grade 11 guide; geometric sequences are Grade 12 content (introduced together with series and sigma notation).

WCED revision booklets, supplementary content verification
Western Cape Education Department revision booklets produced each term for Grade 11. These are used alongside DBE past papers to verify which question types are taught and how they are presented in practice. They also serve as the primary reference for confirming Afrikaans CAPS terminology when Afrikaans content is eventually built. The booklets contain questions drawn from real DBE past papers (with year references), which is how they are traceable to the curriculum.
- WCED Mathematics Grade 11 Revision Booklet, Term 1 (2026, English, incl. memorandum)Grade 11wcedeportal.co.za
Verified Grade 11 Term 1 CAPS coverage: Exponents and Surds (laws, rational exponents, solving exponential equations), Equations and Inequalities (quadratic equations, surd equations, inequalities, nature of roots), and Trigonometry (reduction formulae, co-functions, special angles, simplification, identities). The trigonometry exercises: including the reduction formulae progression examples and trig identity patterns, informed the progression questions in the 11-trigonometry guide. The nature-of-roots exercises (discriminant conditions with parameter k) confirmed the question types and signal phrases in the 11-algebra-equations-inequalities guide.
- WCED Wiskunde Graad 11 Hersieningsmateriaal Kwartaal 1 (2026, Afrikaans, incl. antwoorde)Grade 11wcedeportal.co.za
Afrikaans parallel of the Term 1 2026 English booklet. Used to verify Afrikaans CAPS terminology for Term 1 topics: 'Eksponente en Surde', 'Vergelykings en Ongelykhede', 'Trigonometrie'. Confirms that the Afrikaans CAPS terms for instruction words match those already recorded in lib/instruction-words.ts (e.g. 'Bewys', 'Vereenvoudig', 'Bepaal'). Essential reference for Phase 2 Afrikaans content once the translation work described in CLAUDE.md is completed.
- WCED Mathematics Grade 11 Revision Booklet, Term 2 (2021, English, incl. memorandum)Grade 11wcedeportal.co.za
An earlier (2021) Term 2 revision booklet covering Functions and Graphs, Probability, and Analytical Geometry for Grade 11. Reviewed to confirm that question types and signal phrases for these topics have remained stable across CAPS revisions, no differences found between the 2021 and 2026 versions that would affect the topic guides already built.
- WCED Wiskunde Graad 11 Hersieningsmateriaal Kwartaal 2 (2021, Afrikaans, incl. memo)Grade 11wcedeportal.co.za
Afrikaans parallel of the Term 2 2021 English booklet. Reviewed to confirm Afrikaans CAPS terminology for Functions and Graphs, Probability, and Analytical Geometry. Confirms Afrikaans topic names: 'Funksies en Grafieke', 'Waarskynlikheid', 'Analitiese Meetkunde'. Reference for Phase 2 Afrikaans content work.
- WCED Wiskunde Graad 11 Hersieningsmateriaal Kwartaal 2 (2026, Afrikaans, incl. memo)Grade 11wcedeportal.co.za
Afrikaans parallel of the already-cited WCED Mathematics Grade 11 Revision Booklet Term 2 2026. Used to cross-check the Afrikaans terms for the Functions and Graphs question types (e.g. 'snypunte', 'draaipunt', 'asimptote') against the English equivalents already in the 11-functions-graphs guide.
Siyavula's CAPS-aligned Grade 11 Afrikaans learner workbook, distributed via the WCED portal. Reviewed to confirm Afrikaans CAPS terminology across all Grade 11 topics. Reference for Phase 2 Afrikaans content, provides full Afrikaans-language explanations and exercises that a CAPS-fluent reviewer should check before the /af routes are re-enabled.
Siyavula's CAPS-aligned Grade 11 Afrikaans teacher's guide, distributed via the WCED portal. Companion to the learner workbook above, contains worked answers and curriculum notes. Reference for Phase 2 Afrikaans content verification.

Past papers used for example questions
Question text quoted or closely adapted in the topic guides is checked against the original paper before being marked with a 'Source:' citation. Anything not listed here is an original practice question, and is labelled 'Practice question, not sourced from a past paper' on the site itself. Five question types were searched for across 3–6 past papers each without finding a standalone matching question, and are deliberately left as unsourced practice questions rather than searched further: Grade 10 simple decay (straight-line depreciation), Grade 10 stem-and-leaf plots, Grade 10 angle relationships on a straight line and triangle angle sum, Grade 11 completing the square, and Grade 12 combinations. Each paper reviewed for these types is still listed below with a note on why it didn't match, so this search isn't repeated.
Linear pattern questions (3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.2) used in the Arithmetic sequences guide; quadratic pattern question (4.4, adapted) used in the Quadratic sequences guide.
Quadratic pattern questions (4.1, 4.2, 4.3) used in the Quadratic sequences guide. Finance questions (7.1: compound decay / reducing balance; 7.2, effective rate from nominal rate compounded quarterly; 7.3, two-phase compound growth with changing compounding frequency) used in the Grade 11 Finance guide. Probability questions (8.1: tree diagram for drawing marbles without replacement; 8.2.1, determine if events are mutually exclusive; 8.2.2, determine if events are independent) used in the Grade 11 Probability guide. Algebra questions (1.1.1: factorised quadratic equation; 1.2, simultaneous equations; 1.1.4, quadratic inequality; 1.3, nature of roots/discriminant) used in the Grade 11 Algebra guide. Completing the square and the word-problem type don't appear on this paper and remain practice questions.
- WCED Mathematics Grade 11 Revision Booklet, Term 2 (2026, incl. memorandum)Grade 11wcedeportal.co.za
Functions and Graphs questions used in the x/y-intercepts, turning point, asymptotes, and determining-the-equation guides: Question 2 (GR11 DBE November 2016, parts 2.1 and 2.3) and Question 1 (GR11 DBE November 2017, part 1.3) for the parabola/hyperbola intercept, turning point and asymptote examples; Question 4 (GR11 DBE November 2015, part 4.1) for the 'determine the equation from the graph' example. Verified against the accompanying memorandum PDF (same eresource page) for the numeric answers quoted in each 'what is this asking' explanation.
- WCED Mathematics Grade 11 Revision Booklet, Term 3 (2025, incl. memorandum)Grade 11wcedeportal.co.za
Trigonometry Question 1 (Nov 2018/2016, part 1.1. P̂ = 67°, PQ = 3 cm, PR = 9,2 cm, solve for QR) used as the cosine-rule example in the Sine, cosine and area rules guide. The booklet's Statistics section (cricket batsmen standard-deviation example, cumulative-frequency/ogive exercises) was reviewed but not yet used for a cited example, since those exercises aren't themselves attributed to a specific past exam paper/year.
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF) to verify examples across all 5 Grade 10 Paper 1 guides: algebra (Q1.2.1, Q2.1.1, Q2.1.2, Q2.2.1), number patterns (Q3.1, Q3.2, Q3.4), finance (Q7.2), functions and graphs (Q5.4), and probability (Q8.1, Q8.1.1(a)).
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF) to verify examples across 4 Grade 10 Paper 2 guides: statistics (Q1.3–1.4, frequency table transcribed from the line graph), analytical geometry (Q2.1.1, Q2.1.2, Q2.1.3), trigonometry (Q3.3, Q4.1.1, Q4.2.2), and euclidean geometry (Q7.2). Circle-theorem content in Question 8.2 was reviewed but deliberately not used, to keep circle theorems Grade 12-only per CLAUDE.md.
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF) to verify examples across 6 Grade 12 Paper 1 guides: algebra (Q1.1.1, Q1.1.4, Q1.2), patterns and series (Q2.1.2, Q2.2.1, Q3.1), finance (Q6.1, Q6.2.1), functions and graphs (Q4.1–4.2, Q4.7, Q5.4.1), differential calculus (Q7.1, Q7.2, Q7.4, Q8.3), and probability (Q11.1, Q11.2).
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF) to verify examples across 4 Grade 12 Paper 2 guides: statistics (Q1.1–1.2), analytical geometry (Q4.1), trigonometry (Q5.3, Q5.4.1), and euclidean geometry (Q8.1.1–8.1.2, Q8.2). The tan-chord theorem guide and the tangent-to-a-circle guide were reviewed against this paper but no clean self-contained match was found, so those two examples remain unverified practice questions.
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF) to verify examples across 5 Grade 12 Paper 1 guides: patterns and series (Q2.2, arithmetic sequence, which term = −140), algebra (Q6.6, nature of roots / non-intersection condition), finance (Q7.1.1, future value annuity, Selby's quarterly deposits), differential calculus (Q9.1.2, cubic turning points), and probability (Q11.1.2, 5-digit permutations from {3;4;5;6;7;8;9}). k-substitution (Q1) and combinations (Q11) were reviewed but no clean match was found; those types remain practice questions.
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF) to verify examples across 3 Grade 12 Paper 2 guides: statistics (Q2.2.1, identify r from scatter plot), trigonometry (Q5.2, prove compound identity = 2 tan 2x), and euclidean geometry (Q8.1, tan-chord theorem, N̂₁ = 66°). The equation-of-tangent-to-circle type was reviewed (Q4) but the question asked learners to USE a given tangent, not FIND its equation, so that type remains a practice question.
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF, all 13 pages) to verify examples across four Grade 11 Paper 2 guides. Statistics: five-number summary and box-and-whisker skewness (Q1.1), standard deviation worked backwards from the mean (Q1.2), and ogive/grouped-data percentage (Q2). Analytical geometry: gradient of AB (Q4.1), equation of AC using a perpendicular-diagonals condition (Q3.1–3.2), and distance BT inside a kite (Q3.4.2), no standalone midpoint question was found on this paper, so that type remains a practice question. Trigonometry: reduction-formula simplification (Q5.1) and a trig identity proof (Q5.4), the equation-solving type asked for a general solution rather than a restricted-interval answer, so it wasn't used. Euclidean geometry: chord-bisected-by-radius theorem, both the proof (Q9.1) and a numeric application (Q9.2, cited). Questions 10–12 test tangent theorems, which fall outside this guide's three chord/diameter/segment question types.
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF, all 9 pages) to verify the word-problem example in the Grade 11 Algebra guide (Q10. Bongani's rectangular garden, maximise area with a fixed length of fencing against an existing wall). Q1's algebra questions were reviewed but not used, since those types were already cited from the November 2017 P1 paper; no completing-the-square instruction appears anywhere in this paper either.
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF, all 8 pages read) to verify the midpoint example in the Grade 11 Analytical Geometry guide (Q3.1, midpoint of AB in triangle ABC). Statistics (Q1, Q2) and trigonometry (Q5, Q6) content was reviewed but not used, since those types were already cited from the November 2017 P2 paper; Q5.5 and Q6.3 ask for a general solution or a graphical read-off rather than a restricted-interval algebraic solve, so the 'solving trig equations within a given interval' type remains a practice question. No Euclidean geometry (circle) content appears on this paper. Question 7 is the sine/cosine rule instead.
Opened and read page-by-page to verify the k-substitution example in the Grade 12 Algebra guide (Q1.2, solve a + 64/a = 16 for a, then 'hence' solve 2ˣ + 2⁽⁶⁻ˣ⁾ = 16 for x using the same equation with k = 2ˣ substituted). Question 10 (flags in a row, independent events) was reviewed for the combinations type but uses arrangements/FCP rather than a 'choose without order' selection, so that type remains uncited.
Opened and read page-by-page but no examples were taken from it. Question 1 has no k-substitution equation (a nature-of-roots/surd-equation mix instead), and Question 10.2's '4-digit combination lock' code is a permutation/FCP question despite the name, digits are ordered and the position matters, so the combinations type remains uncited.
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF, all 9 pages) but no examples were taken from it. Question 1.3 is a nature-of-roots proof using a geometric-sequence condition, not a k-substitution equation, so the k-substitution type remains uncited. Question 12.2 is a permutation/arrangement question (12 books placed on a shelf, with restrictions), not a committee-style 'choose without order' combinations question, so that type also remains uncited.
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF, all 10 pages) but no examples were taken from it. The two remaining uncited Grade 12 Paper 1 types didn't appear: there is no k-substitution equation in Question 1, and the counting question (Q10, telephone numbers) uses the fundamental counting principle rather than committee-style combinations.
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF) to verify the equation-of-the-tangent-to-a-circle example in the Grade 12 Analytical Geometry guide (Q4.3, equation of tangent NM to the circle centred at the origin, touching at M(−3 ; 4)).
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF) to verify the basic-probability example in the Grade 10 Probability guide (Q8.2, probability of drawing a blue ball from a bag of 3 blue and x yellow balls). The paper's finance question (Q4) covers hire purchase and exchange rates, not straight-line depreciation, so the simple-decay example remains a practice question.
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF, all 10 pages) but no examples were taken from it. The statistics questions use a raw data table and grouped frequency table (no stem-and-leaf plot), and the Euclidean geometry questions are multi-step parallelogram and midpoint-theorem proofs rather than standalone angle-relationship or triangle-angle-sum questions, the remaining uncited Grade 10 Paper 2 types.
The standalone memorandum for the Term 3 2025 booklet above, ten worked trigonometry questions (sine rule, cosine rule, area rule, 2D problems with angles of elevation and bearings) and eleven worked statistics questions (mean, standard deviation, five-number summary, skewness, ogives). Used to confirm the mark allocations and worked steps referenced in the Term 3 exam prep article.
Opened and read page-by-page (scanned PDF) to verify examples for 2 Grade 10 Paper 1 guides: functions and graphs (Q5.3, calculate a and q for g(x) = ax² + q given intercepts; Q5.4, determine equation of linear function through T and R). The paper also covers patterns, simple interest, exponential and hyperbolic functions, and probability (Venn diagram), but those types were already cited from the 2018 paper.
