Find the actual numeric or algebraic value(s) of the unknown variable(s), showing your method. Unlike 'simplify', which leaves an expression, 'solve' requires you to reach a specific value. Set up the equation if needed, apply your technique (factorising, formula, completing the square), and state the final answer with the variable name.

Common mistake

The most common error is stopping after factorising or rearranging without continuing to find the actual value of the variable. Writing '(x − 3)(x + 2) = 0' and stopping there is incomplete, you must also write 'therefore x = 3 or x = −2'. The factored form earns partial marks; the actual values earn the remaining marks. A second mistake is giving only one root when there are two.
